Mocha Mommy in the City

June is the month that initiates summer fun! Nia Lawrence, also known as Mocha Mommy in the City is our newest June 2018 Mom of the Month. Not only does she know how to have fun but she is shining bright. Keep scrolling so you can catch up on why she is so amazing!

Nia Lawrence is blessed to be the mom to a beautiful little girl, Cameron. Nia is a great beauty with a goal of creating content to help woman live their lives, simply which we are definitely fans of. Miss Lawrence is owner of The Nia Lawrence Design Co, which is a Brooklyn based, “full-service creative studio— providing editorial, print and marketing design and art direction”. She explains that the birth of this company came after being laid off from [her] role as Sr Art Director at Martha Stewart Living. When asked to describe a typical day Nia replies, “Typically I juggle 2-3 projects that range from magazines, invites, marketing materials and website concepting. I take my daughter to school at 8:30 and start working at 10am from my home office. I work until after school pickup at 6 then it’s the nighttime routine. I often work for a few hours after my daughter is in bed….whether that’s prepping lunch for the next day, returning emails, cleaning or blogging on the side”! – Who can relate to this mommy hustle? We know we can.

Miss Nia really is incredible. We challenged her to describe herself using 3 adjectives. She chose, optimistic, real and resourceful. She clarifies, “I describe myself as an eternal optimist. I’m always looking for the bright side of every situation. I encourage all my friends and followers to embrace a spirit of gratitude and to “count it all joy”. In regards to being resourceful, Nia describes her background with women’s magazine. “My background is in creating visual content for women’s magazines. I’ve helped editors from magazines such as Real Simple, Martha Stewart Living and Women’s Health figure out how to transform their words into stories. I’ve learned so much from these women as well and have developed an arsenal of tips and tricks for simplifying life”. She is defining herself as real saying, “entrepreneurship, single motherhood, and living in NYC isn’t always easy. I love open, honest spaces with no judgements- where we’re all allowed to voice both our greatest triumphs and frustrations”.

As a single parent, Nia makes reference that she can be hard on herself. She explains she often finds struggle in “trying to keep up with other families at school, after school, extra curricular activities as a single mom. I always feel the guilt that I’m not entirely enough for my daughter”. And while sometimes she may feel that she is ‘less than’, Miss Lawrence prides herself on helping her daughter, Cameron figure out the world. Nia shares, “I remember getting so frustrated with Cameron years ago over the sheer volume of questions she had for me. My aunt said: “She’s just trying to figure out the world.” Ever since that day I’ve completely changed my attitude towards the never-ending barrage of questions. My favorite thing about being her mom is having the responsibility of helping her figure out the world, and see it unfold before her eyes”.

When it comes to balancing, Nia labels herself as a list making, prioritizing mama. When asked about multi-tasking, she responds, “I don’t”! She continues, “I’ve learned that to do something well, I need to devote my full attention to it. No matter the task. I’ve burned too much toast, just stepping away to help my daughter slip on her shoes. Obviously, life calls for times when you have to juggle 40 things at once [and] for those times I live by my lists. I write out every single step of the things that need to be done so I don’t miss a thing”! And when feeling overwhelmed and in need of self-reflection to remain motivated, she takes walks. “changing the scenery is so helpful when you’re stuck or feeling down. I often leave my desk with just my keys and some cash and take a quick 5-minute walk around the block. I leave my phone so I can truly disconnect and clear my head. A little sun and fresh air can brighten any day”! – We love this method of self-care.

As for new mothers, Nia is offering some great advice! “Build a tribe early on. Meet and make mom friends everywhere you go. (And don’t forget to strengthen your bonds with your single / non-mom friends too.)” She remains, “adjusting to being a new mom can be overwhelming. You barely have time to shower regularly, so catching up with friends stops being a priority. But it’s so important to have a supportive group of great friends behind you, especially once the kids are in school and it’s time to start to focus more on you”!

Nia is a woman who is living life with no boundaries and we love it! She has the goal of ensuring she teaches her daughter, Cameron the same. She supports that she’s “looking forward to teaching [her] daughter how to find happiness. I love that self-care and self-love has been such a strong message in today’s advertising and media. My generation was encouraged to pursue careers for money. I see the new generations living more for themselves, the moment and the pursuit of happiness. I want to teach my daughter that anything is possible and there are no limits to what she can pursue as long as it makes her happy”.
