Mommy and Me Style: NYC Nights

Every once in a while I have to take my daughter with me to an evening event. I’ll make the exception if the event is relatively kid friendly and on the weekends. I want my daughter to be comfortable in all settings….weather she needs to introduce herself to an artist at his gallery opening, or to new kids at a birthday party. We have to have the social skills to handle it all!

It’s been a while since I’ve written a style feature. It just warmed up in NYC and I’m finally able to shed the layers and get into some of the spring and summer styles my west coast friends have been rocking for months! I’m happy to announce that I’m packing away the leggings and looking forward to dressing with more intention 🙂

I dress for comfort. Always. There’s no exception to this rule. I don’t believe in restrictive clothing or shoes that pinch my feet. I don’t wear my legs out when it’s cold outside. I just want to be happy in my clothes and comfy in my skin. When I’m uncomfortable I’m miserable…waiting for the day to end so I can get back into my sweats and under my blanket. So when I find a dress that I can wear in public that feels like a nightgown?? A win, for sure.
As a comfort enthusiast, I stay fully dedicated to being comfortable in my clothes 100% of the time. Ok, 1000% of the time.
As the Creative Director of my own design studio, I spend half of the day at home on my laptop designing magazines, event invites and collateral, taking conference calls and sometimes taking the midday nap 🙂  As the full time mom to a Kindergartener, I spend half of the day on the playground at school pickups, chatting with parents, teachers and  school administrators, entertaining my 5 year old, cooking, cleaning and guiding my kid through pages and pages of homework.

I invest in outerwear because we spend SO much time walking around NYC. This signature red plaid peacoat has been a staple for warmer winter days. From classic to glam….a tartan inspired coat like our favorite featured below makes a statement and provides serious versatility all season long. Continue to scroll for 3 ways to style this adorable Cat & Jack coat. Basics, for everyday, a playful spin with lots of accessories and a glammed out look complete with mommy’s fur stole.

Love,
The Lawrences

There are less than 30 days left until summer is over, so make sure to take advantage of every second of these beautiful, long sunny days. We spend our weekends dining al fresco every chance we get. This is one of our favorite dates.  Habana Outpost, on Fulton Avenue in Brooklyn is always a fun time. If you haven’t been, swing by for tacos and margaritas underneath their rainbow umbrellas and brightly colored benches. Their chicken fingers never disappoint for the kiddos and the live DJ keeps the mood fresh and fun.

When styled correctly, tulle can be so romantic and chic. Perfect for this beautiful day on Chicago’s southside, this tulle skirt by Pink Blush is definitely a new summer staple for me. It’s versatile enough to be styled with pumps and sneakers. It’s also strong enough to hold it’s shape and give just the right amount of playfulness for this windy city 🙂 I’ll definitely be returning to this trendy online boutique to check out the other colors. It also comes in black and pink!

There are a few wildcard months in New York where I’m clueless about how to dress….mostly during the transitional months. April and May are a toss up. Summer could creep in early, or winter could hang on. We never know. September and October could have us still rocking bare thighs or bundled in fur hoods.

It’s currently April and we’re dealing with the last bits of winter, while remaining optimistic about spring.  What was snow for the past 3 months has turned to rain, but every once in a while the clouds part and we get a sunny day.
